The neighbouring state, Sarawak, provides an exciting addition to your comprehensive birding tour in Sabah. The extension involves travelling to Sarawak Highlands such as Ba’Kelalan and Payeh Maga and staying in a shelter or in a family-run guesthouse (homestay).

ITINERARY: 

DAY 01 

• Pick up in Kota Kinabalu. Drive for 4 hours to reach Lawas. Travel for 2 more hours on dirt and gravel road to Merarap Hot Spring (MHS). Wildlife watching around Merarap or take a deep soak in the Hot Spring. Meals: Full Board. Overnight at MHS.

• The main objective of staying overnight here is to break the long journey from Kota Kinabalu to Ba’Kelalan.

DAY 02 and DAY 03 

• After breakfast travel for 4-5 hours on dirt and gravel road to Ba’Kelalan. We will be birding here for 2 days. Meals: Full Board. Overnight at Homestay.

• Ba'Kelalan is located in Lawas District; it is a Lun Bawang tribe village located in the northeast highlands of Sarawak. Bird watchers and photographers from around the world come here to see the elusive bird called the Dulit Frogmouth (Batrachostomus harterti). Other species should seen here include Hose's Broadbill, Bornean Bulbul, Bornean Barbet, Whitehead's Spiderhunter, Mountain Serpent Eagle and Black-thigh Falconet.

DAY 04 

• Travel for 4 hours on dirt and gravel road to Tien Cool Homestay (TCH). Birding around TCH. Meals: Full Board. Overnight at TCH. 

DAY 05 and DAY 06

• Trek for 3-4 hours to reach Camp One (shelter) on the foot of Payeh Maga Highlands. We will be birding here for 2 days within the vicinity of Camp One. Meals: Full Board. Overnight in a shelter at Camp One.

• The highlands of Payeh Maga (that means swampy highlands in the Lun Bawang language of Sarawak) has over 180 bird species including 27 endemic bird species including Black Oriole, Bornean Banded Pitta, Hose's Broadbill, Bornean Frogmouth and Malay Rail-Babbler.

DAY 07 

• After breakfast, pack your stuffs and trek back to TCH. Drive to Lawas and Kota Kinabalu International Airport or the city. All Meals: Own Account.

TOUR INCLUDES:

1 night at Merarap Hot Spring – Standard Room.

2 nights at Ba’Kelalan Homestay.

1 night at Tien Cool Homestay.

2 nights at Camp One Shelter.
